Today, February 1st, is the birthday of Langston Hughes. He was born in Missouri in 1902 and went on to become one of the leading writers of the Harlem Renaissance. In my book,The Secret of Ebbets Field, the old man, Henry, half-sings, half-recites one of Hughes’ poems as a kind of grace before a meal: Bring me all of your dreams,You dreamers, Bring me all of your Heart melodies That I may wrap them In a blue cloud-cloth Away from the too-rough fingers of the world.

Happy birthday, Mr. Hughes.
